ITHACA

The ITHACA project (https://www.ithaca-project.eu/) is funded by the European Union (Horizon Europe), and aims to improve our understanding of the complexities and controversies surrounding the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in the field of civic participation. The project aims to promote responsible practices of research and innovation that align AI technologies with human rights, values, and ethical principles. The ultimate goal of ITHACA is to maximize the positive impact of AI on democratic institutions and processes. It will develop and test an online discussion platform incorporating human and social perspectives into the design process. The platform will be designed to be human-centric and transparent and will especifically be inclusive and account for the needs of persons from vulnerable groups.

Raising the Floor’s Role

Raising the Floor has a transversal role throughout the project and specifically leads the work related to:

  • Engaging representatives from the identified vulnerable groups to gain insights, collect and identify preliminary needs and preferences and help design a Citizen engagement strategy.
  • Facilitating the participation of Citizens, and the creation of an AI Citizens Juries‘ group, so these engage throughout the research, design and implementation phases.
  • Facilitating the field work, workshops, interviews and other work to ensure the Citizen voices are included in the design and development processes.
  • Fostering algorithmic literacy and to facilitate reflection and critical dialogue with citizens on how the design and development of AI and data-driven systems might result in particular harms and benefits.
  • Ensuring that vulnerable and marginalized groups are adequately represented in the algorithmic impact assessment and human centred designed process and have meaningful decision-making power.
  • Ensuring that human rights impacts stemming from the design, development and ongoing deployment of algorithmic systems are comprehensively monitored, debated and addressed. and is interested in all work related to social equity and digital inclusion.
